Marriage of foreigners in Brazil

A foreigner wishing to marry in Brazil has to present some documents issued in the place he has been living for the past two years. To be valid in Brazil, all documents issued in Ireland must be legalized by the Consular Section of the Brazilian Embassy in Dublin.


The following documents are usually required from an Irish Citizen non-resident in Brazil:

1. Birth Certificate (original, full form);

2. If divorced, Divorce Decree (Absolute) and Marriage Certificate (original);

3. If widowed, Death Certificate of spouse and marriage certificate (original);

4. Certificate of Non-Impediment, which can be done in two different ways:

a) Certificate of Freedom to Marry (Certificate de Coutume) issued by the Consular Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs (80 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin 2, Tel.: 01- 408 25 68);

or

b) a Notarised Affidavit drawn up by a Notary Public, signed by two persons over 21 years of age, declaring that they have known the applicant for more than two years, and that to their knowledge there is no impediment to his/her marriage;

5. Residence Certificate, which can be done in two different ways:
a) a declaration issued by the local Register of Electors (county councils and city corporations), stating the applicant’s address according to their archives, in the last two years;

or

b) a Notarised Affidavit drawn up by a Notary Public stating where the applicant has been living, for the past two years;

6. Power of Attorney, drawn up by a Notary Public and legalised by the Brazilian Embassy in Dublin, when required by the Register Office (Cartório) in Brazil. Please note that the Register Office (Cartório) may provide you with a model of this document in Portuguese only.

7. Passport (original or certified photocopy).


Consular fees and processing time

· All consular fees must be lodged to the Embassy of Brazil’s account nr. 30095047, sort code 90-00-17, Bank of Ireland, College Green, Dublin 2, prior to applying for the visa. Please note that electronic transfers are not accepted, and that this Consular Section does not handle any payment.

· The consular fee is € 20.00 per document.

· Processing time: five working days.

Note: All documents in a foreign language must be translated into Portuguese by a sworn translator, preferably in Brazil.
